Donors are the key to our mission here at LifeShare. Without their contributions, we could not aid in sustaining the community’s blood supply for the many patients in dire need of blood. Donors are the true heroes in our eyes, and keeping them safe is our priority.
That’s why we are launching a new safety campaign- SIT SIP SNACK- to inform donors about the safety precautions they can take before, during and after a blood donation. We want everyone who donates to know how much we appreciate them, and what better way to show it then making sure they are taken care of first!
So here are a few things donors can do to take care of themselves pre-donation:
1. Get a good night’s SLEEP!- don’t neglect yourself
2. Eat regular meals - something with a little salt is good
3. Drink plenty of fluids - preferably water
During donation, we encourage our donors to use Applied Muscle Tension. It’s a little exercise for the blood pressure that’s as easy as 1-2-3-4-5 . . . Relax and Repeat. Here’s how it works:
Tense the upper body muscles for 5 seconds, release and relax for 5 seconds.
Now, the mid-section 1-2-3-4-5 . . . Relax.
Finally, the legs 1-2-3-4-5 . . . Relax. Repeat.
After making a donation, donors need to sit up slowly and count to 10 before going anywhere. If feeling good, donors should allow someone to escort them to a refreshment area where they must…
SIT- for at least 15 minutes
SIP- on a refreshing drink and start increasing fluids for the next 24 hours
SNACK- on something good (we’ll bring the food, you bring your appetite!)
We want our donor heroes to have a good donation experience so that together we can continue to save lives. Remember donors, if you are giving blood and feel faint or dizzy at any time- TELL someone! For us, safety is number one. After giving blood, those that donate will be able to return to their normal activities. However, we ask that our donors please don’t go straight into workout routines of lifting weights. Give the body a little time to adjust! Be sure to increase water intake, and eat well at the next regular meal. We are so grateful for all our donors’ gifts of life!
