Autologous/Directed Donations

Autologous Donation
Autologous blood donations come from patients who donate blood for their own use. It is most effectively used when a patient has a scheduled procedure in which a transfusion is anticipated. This type donation must be “ordered” by the patient’s physician. The units are labeled to ensure the patient receives their own blood. Since this is the safest blood a patient can receive, the blood center strongly supports the autologous donor program. Patients are charged for each unit of autologous blood collected only if outside our service area and hospitals will not accept our charges.

Directed Donation
Directed donors are donors selected by a patient or the patient’s family to give blood for the patient’s use. These donors are usually family members or friends of the patient who have the same blood type. Directed donors must meet the same donor requirements as a “whole blood” donor. A consent form is signed by the donor releasing their unit of blood to be used by the patient.
