Significant Increase in Blood Donations Needed Today to Stabilize Blood Supply

The area’s blood supply continues to be in a critical situation. A recent decrease in blood donors, particularly during the holidays and since the first of the year, has the local blood inventory at a minimum. 1000 donations are needed between today and tomorrow to stabilize the blood supply, a life-saving resource with no substitute.

LifeShare Blood Centers has extended their center hours to accommodate donors' schedules.

“Since the beginning of the year, the supply has taken a sharp drop. We are seeing the weather and early flu season impact some blood drives. Because of this, we need additional donors to come in right away. Not just our faithful, regular donors, but also residents who may not have given before or haven’t donated in a while, this is the time for those people to take an hour out of their day to make a difference,” says Tina Hooper, spokesperson for LifeShare Blood Centers.

Hospitals must have blood on-hand and ready to transfuse for patients in critical need. Accident victims, surgery patients, and persons with blood disorders are a few examples of the people that receive a life-saving benefit from the blood. Blood type O and type B negative are especially needed; however all types are in need and any persons who do not know their blood type are welcome. It takes 24 hours or more to make the blood available for use after it is donated.
