Colson Shaw

Colson is the third son of Alan and Yvette Shaw who resides in Minden, Louisiana. At birth, he was diagnosed with a rare blood disease called Diamond Blackfan Anemia. There are only 400 known cases worldwide. This rare form of anemia is characterized by the bone marrow's inability to produce fresh red blood cells. Red blood cells carry oxygen to all the body's tissues. Colson must undergo blood transfusions every four to six weeks in order to combat this deadly disease.

Many blood drives have been held in Colson's honor in order to help raise the awareness of the need for regular blood donations on a daily basis and this rare blood disorder.

On Friday, January 3, 2003 Colson, who will be 2 in April, went to Minden Medical Center for his monthly transfusion. When the medical staff checked him out, he did not need the transfusion. This was a milestone for the Shaw family. They celebrated this event by visiting LifeShare Blood Centers in Shreveport. They came bearing gifts of thanks to the staff.

The Shaw family is very grateful to LifeShare Blood Centers and all the people who help keep an adequate blood supply on a daily basis.
