Contact the Hospital Services department of your local LifeShare Blood Centers to place an order. We are available to accept orders from hospitals every day, 24 hours a day. Staffing varies among the different centers and there are times when calls are routed through an answering service. These times may include evenings, nights, and major holidays. Contact your local Hospital Services department for specific hours.
State the products required, ABO/Rh, quantity, status, and any special attributes needed (i.e., irradiated, CMV negative, etc.).
Regular orders are for components that LifeShare Blood Centers keeps in stock. Time frame of delivery depends on the distance from the blood center to your facility.
The following guidelines are used by LifeShare Blood Centers to ship regular orders. When placing an order, indicate type(s) of blood component(s), quantity and time frame for delivery.
- STAT: The request is for a specific patient(s) and the need is critical. This type of request always receives priority.
- Other: The request may or may not be for specific patient(s), but the need is not critical. State the time of day this order is needed or the latest time this order can be delivered.
- Stock (standing orders/routines): The request is for inventory purposes only. Order is shipped as workload and product availability permit, but not later than 24 hours from the time the order is taken.
Time frames may vary by location, so contact your local Hospital Services department for clarification. Time frames may also vary due to other factors (e.g., blood shortages, 3 day weekends, high usage).
Hospitals within a certain proximity to the blood center are to report their morning inventory to the local Hospital Services center Monday through Friday except for holidays. This may be done by phone or fax. Stock requests may also be made at this time. Refer to LifeShare Blood Centers Form S-76, "Hospital Blood Inventory/Blood Product Order", see side 2 for instructions. If desired, hospital staff may use their own internal form.
A blood stock level, as determined by LifeShare Blood Centers and the transfusion facility, is rotated on an agreed upon schedule. When possible, LifeShare Blood Centers requests the use of shorter dated units first, and the timely release of untransfused, crossmatched blood for other patient use or return to the blood center.
Units that are not yet completely tested require release following LifeShare Blood Centers Emergency Release Policies. LifeShare’s Medical Director approves Emergency Release. Products are labeled appropriately and an “Emergency Release” form is completed and signed by a hospital representative. Contact your local Hospital Services department for the proper documentation for Emergency Release. A discussion with Hospital Services and/or LifeShare Blood Centers Medical Director may facilitate the process for delivery of these special units.
