Father of Blood Banking
Dr. Charles Drew is known as “The Father of Blood Banks.” Dr. Drew was an African American surgeon who pioneered methods of storing blood plasma for transfusion, as well as organized the first large-scale blood bank in the United Statees. Dr. Drew’s pioneering efforts ended the exclusion of African American plasma donations from supply networks. Dr. Drew was only 45 years at the time of his death. Dr. Drew’s contributions to blood banking are immeasurable.
