What are the Benefits of Donating Blood?

Are you considering donating blood? The benefits can be remarkable, both for you and the patients who receive your donation. When you donate at LifeShare Blood Center, your blood generally stays right here in your community. The patients receiving your potentially life-saving blood might even be your friends and neighbors. Let’s look at some of the benefits of donating blood at LifeShare Blood Center.

How Recipients Benefit from Your Blood Donation

One in three people will need a blood transfusion at some point in their lives. It could be because of an accident, surgery, or a health issue such as cancer. Without compassionate community heroes like our donors, some of those in need of blood might die. There is no substitute for human blood, which is why it’s so important for anyone who can, to donate. So, be a hero and donate blood today!

Benefits to the Blood Donor

Recipients of a blood donation aren’t the only ones who benefit from your generosity. LifeShare donors receive some important benefits from donating blood as well.

You’ll Receive a Free Wellness Checkup

When you come in to donate, we will take your temperature and blood pressure, measure your heart rate, and test your iron level. We run a total of 14 tests, including cholesterol, on every blood donation. You will be able to access your health information via the Donor Portal or notified of abnormal results so you can discuss them with your regular provider. These tests are just one of the many benefits of giving blood.

This mini-physical helps identify potential problems such as high blood pressure or a potential heart problem like an arrhythmia. You’ll know whether you’re healthy enough to donate by the time we are through with this free wellness checkup.

Donating Blood Can Provide Health Benefits to the Donor

Donating blood regularly may also reduce cardiovascular risk factors. Lowering your blood viscosity through regular donations helps reduce your chances of suffering a blood clot, heart attack, or stroke. You’ll also learn your blood type if you don’t already know it.

Helping Others Helps Improve Your Mental Health

It just feels good to help others. Knowing you have done so does wonders for your mental health and sense of well-being, including lowering your risk of depression and possibly improving your lifespan.
We’ll even provide a free snack and a beverage after your donation to give your body a jumpstart in replenishing the blood you’ve donated!

How to Get Involved in Blood Donation

Set up a blood drive to help ensure our community always has enough blood to meet our needs. Any person, school, business, or other interested group can organize and host a blood drive. In fact, these types of blood drives supply approximately half of all blood donations in this country. Experience the multiple benefits of donating blood for yourself when you help with a community blood drive.
